Users in hundreds of cities across the U.S. will have access to 4,000 free Boingo wireless hotspots compliments of Google Play through the end of September according to an announcement this morning. The free wireless service is part of a promotion offered through Cloud Nine Media platform, which was recently acquired by Boingo. The platform enables advertisers to reach consumers through place-based brand engagements with wifi sponsorships.
Among the places where the free wireless service will be active include 15 airports (including JFK, O’Hare & Seattle Tacoma), the Manhattan subway system among others, and thousands of malls, cafes and recreation areas. Google Play is the fist company to take advantage of the sponsorship opportunity offered by Boingo’s Cloud Nine platform. The platform lets brands reach a captive audience of wireless users with geographic specific offerings, deals and other promotions. The company claims to reach 1.5 billion consumers annually with it’s advertising supported free wifi service.
“Google Play is the first to take part in our newly expanded Wi-Fi sponsorship network, which reaches millions of consumers each month with place-based brand engagements,” said Dawn Callahan, vice president of consumer marketing for Boingo Wireless. “Sponsorships like this give users the free Wi-Fi they crave, advertisers the consumer interaction they need, and venues the revenue to offset the costs associated with providing a high-bandwidth Wi-Fi experience.”
Anyone who can access Google Play is eligible to participate in the promotion, which of course leaves iPhone, iPad users to their own devices, so to speak.
