If you haven’t looked at the rest of the site and just read the blog articles and view the bookmarks, it’s worth mentioning that I will be building out a comprehensive set of free SEO tools under the services menu for now.

Currently there is a Keyword Suggestion Tool and a Niche Keyword Finder. I have also just found a sponsor to provide several more additional free SEO tools like a Domain Age Check, Keyword Density, Keyword Clouds, Indexation Tools, Link Popularity tools and

much more. So check back, I will try to add at least one new tool a day. Over the weekend I can probably get to more, but Disney keeps me busy with SEO work there during the week, so don’t expect too much. I can only do so much.

I think people who don’t blog, or don’t blog with SEO in mind misunderstand just how time consuming it can be. But when you get that one comment saying you helped someone find something, or you were able to give someone information they couldn’t find elsewhere, or just happy clients make me want to keep moving forward. I might not have the most followers, visits or even the best content, but I think i have found a nice little platform to sound off about search in general, some news thrown in and now some free SEO tools. Seems to me that I’m adding value by consolidating information, tools and more in one place. It also doesn’t hurt that the site actually drives business to Simon Search Marketing, which was ultimately what is was designed for, but now with a full time job and maxed out on freelance clients, I still want to keep it as a resource, a tool, a place to relax and converse and interact with others with similar interests. I find it useful to participate in other blog communities as well, so there are some i read religiously and others that I wish there was more time in the day to read, but I thought I would outline some of the creme de la creme of Search blogs broken down in to a few different categories. For instance, Science for SEO does a great job of looking at SEO from a scientific perspective, while a site like Web Pro News focuses on a lot of topics, but generally maintains a news production feel to it, especially the videos. These are both great resources but for different reasons. Anyway, hopefully i can get that put together shortly also.

In an age where speed is sometimes more crucial than other factors, some people have marginalized RSS as too slow, or not as fast as other Real Time communications. Well this is the first major change to RSS and the way it delivers content that is more in line with the expectations that timing is everything and now is better than 15 minutes from now.

More in-depth articles on the technology can be found here, and if you have ideas on how this can help the average blogger, or perhaps how it can be used for specific app’s or situations, please share.

According to a post by Google’s Chief Economist Hal Varian, Google Domestic Trends has been used to mimic variables such as initial claims of unemployment, among other things to predict short economic trends. Given that one of the biggest leading indicators of economic activity is number of people who file for unemployment this could be modeled and predicted using Google Domestic Trends.

According to Research by Macro-economists Robert Gordon and James Hamilton, “…in each of the last six recessions, the recovery began within 8 weeks of the peak in new unemployment claims.”

Google applied the methodology outlined in the above research to predict initial unemployment claims using past values in a time-series then applied the Google Trends data to see how much it improved the forecast. Mr. Varian and his team found over a 15% reduction in mean absolute error in predictions one week out. Detailed information can be found in this PDF.

The point of the story is that initial claims have been declining from their peak and the Google Trend data predicts further declines. This is one Google trend everyone hopes continues.

ComScore recently reported a 51% increase in the number of mobile users looking for local content. ComScore is a leading measurement and digital intelligence company who stated in a June 9th release that online directories saw the most growth. From March 2008 to March 2009 online directories saw a 73% increase in use by on-the-go mobile users.

The most popular method for accessing local content is still the mobile based browser, followed by SMS and finally mobile applications, which despite the tremendous marketing dollars behind them, failed to deliver the type of growth one would have expected. Some speculate the number of users using mobile applications for access will surpass SMS soon, considering that SUPERPAGES, owned by Idearc, along with AT&T Interactive’s YELLOWPAGES.COM and a slew of other properties have recently developed iPhone applications.
