SEOmoz Acquires Followerwonk

seomoz logoIn what the press statement called, “the friendliest acquisition ever”, SEOmoz (Moz), the Seattle based SEO software company purchased Twitter follower management and analytics company Followerwonk in a recently finalized deal of which details were not immediately available.  SEOmoz makes SEO software delivered as a service who boasts a roster of over 15k paying subscribers.  They also recently received $18 million in series B funding from Foundry Group and Ignition Partners. The Followerwonk acquisition, according to the press release, “…will allow Moz to expand Followerwonks capabilities, which include Twitter profile searches, user comparison and analysis through visual graphs. 

With the increased focus on social signals in search, the acquisition also allows SEOmoz to possibly incorporate much of the analytics data from Followerwonk and roll it into a product designed to analyze Twitter social signals for SEO, but this is speculation.  Much like SEOmoz provides tools like Open Site Explorer, Mozscape API and other proprietary technologies designed to help companies optimize their links, provide competitor research, find opportunities and other tasks, something like this could be built out of Followerwonks technology specifically designed for Twitter.

Formed by a team of individual developers back in 2009, Followerwonk developed a product that allowed users to search Twitter bio’s, something the Twitter site still doesn’t do. From there they listened to their audience, they fine tuned their product adding features like side-by-side comparison charts, sorting by follower count, searching within social graphs, among other enhancements.

“Followerwonk is one of those awesome, young companies that just has something special,” said SEOmoz CEO and co-founder Rand Fishkin. “We really dug what they were able to do from a social media standpoint and the whole crew fit in really well with the Moz culture. We’re looking forward to meshing our ideas and making something really cool.”
